It's amazing what you can do with a load of scraps right?
When you've ran out of propellant in your spray cans, here's an idea.
- Get some form of base; for example: in the photo I used a spent fishing line reel.
- Get together a couple of plastic drinking straws.
- Get some old sprue from built models.
- Get some wire and some wire mesh (aka the one used in the pic was from a bunsen burner tripod). Either that or mesh on eBay can be quite cheap.
- Get some PVA glue and paints together.
So I turned the spray can upside down and glued the nozzle into the centre of the fishing line reel. After that I made up a platform of sprue bits, wire and wire mesh, in a square-like fashion. This was then ready for a blotching with some textured paint (mainly containing sand but also some crackle effect paint) and then sprayed all black.
A little hint when painting scenery: Don't bother using expensive paints such as Citadel unless you're doing small details.
I then dry-brushed the entire piece silver until it got to a point that I was happy. I then decided to cover up most of it with a drybrush of Citadel Ryza Rust (detailing), as I wanted an aged, weathered and rusted look. This was most prominent on the parts that were crackle paint effect, as I wanted it to look as if the paint was peeling.
This was then all washed with a home-made concoction of Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil (brown paint with water, black paint with water).
Once that dried, I went back over with a couple more spots of Ryza Rust to make the rust effect pop. The final detailing was some Gloss Nuln Oil to make the model look as if it was leaking oil.
The same method was painted on the straws and then they were glued on once the model had been fully painted.
